Treo 600 Updated to Support Sprint's New SMS Implementation
Two Operation Gadget story threads converged today. Way back in November, I reported that Sprint was working on a "true" SMS service. In other words, a text message service that pushes messages out to your phone without requiring an Internet connection. I've also repeatedly pointed out that the Treo 600 is most available in the U.S. from Sprint PCS. This was alluded to in the New York Times Magazine article about the Treo 600 that was published this past Sunday.
Today, we noticed that palmOne has released an update for Treo 600 users on the Sprint PCS network that "corrects SMS Messaging with Sprint's new network SMS implementation". In addition to this long-awaited feature, the update provides hot key support for navigating Sprint's wireless website, and several bug fixes for embedded Treo applications.

Comments
I just downloaded and successfully installed the updater for the Treo 600 on the Sprint PCS network. Surprisingly, SMS messaging still does not work! Upon trying to send an SMS message, I receive the same Alert/Error that I have always received: "Message Not Delivered - This service will be available soon. You will receive a text message when it is ready..."
I'm going to spend a little time trying to figure out what's going on. I'll try to post back what I find out.

I have had all kinds of problems with SMS on my Sprint Treo 600. Although i am able to send and receive, my unit always re-sets after I receive a SMS message -- very frustrating.

Just purchased the treo 600 last week and will be returning it for a blackberry tomorrow. while the design and size of the treo is seductive to drop 450 on a phone the functions actually aren't. nothing works without third party software and the treo representatives (palm 1) are among the worst people you could possibly deal with. Who pays 450 for a phone and has a free yahoo account? so what if you can retrieve emails from yahoo? If you use a corporate email account you're screwed. My old Palm V synced better than this treo. You can keep it box and all!
